IU D3 Presents: Pink the Rink
The IU hockey team announces their annual philanthropy game “Pink the Rink” which will take place at the Frank Southern Ice Arena Oct. 26 at 9:15 p.m. against Ferris State University.
Matt Turner, an IU hockey player, said this is an annual event that the team has hosted for years to raise awareness for breast cancer.
This year, all fundraising proceeds will benefit the Olcott Center, a community resource located in Bloomington whose mission is to serve patients and families who are affected by cancer. All services are free thanks to private donations and community fundraising events. Services include one-on-one counseling, medical massages during cancer treatment, support groups, etc.
Turner said that in past years, the team has supported general breast cancer awareness funds, but this year they wanted to amp it up.
“We feel like this is going to make a bigger impact on people’s lives in the community” Turner said.
Theta Chi and Delta Gamma have joined in on the event this year to boost the fundraising efforts and will make up a large chunk of the crowd on game day.
With a fundraising goal of $5,000, Turner created an Everyday Hero fundraising page. In addition to the donation website, fans will be charged $5 at the door or $10 if they would like to purchase a Pink the Rink T-shirt. Fans will be wearing a purchased t-shirt or any pink attire that they have, and the team will wear pink uniforms to show their support.
“I think it’s going to be emotional for some people,” said Turner. “We are coming off four straight wins. It’s going to be a rowdy crowd, we’re expecting a great turnout.”
