Bryan Mooney Qualifies for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in South Africa

Team Captain Bryan Mooney started training for Ironman Triathlons in April of 2017 and competed for the first time in Ontario, Canada just three months later. A friend of his at Indiana University had competed in triathlons previously and convinced him to do Ironman 70.3 Muskoka. Mooney said, “With minimal bike experience, April through July consisted of a lot of training.” After competing in his first triathlon, he quickly became hooked to the sport and signed up for two more that summer.

To date, he has completed 4 Half Ironman Triathlons, including Ironman 70.3 Muskoka in July 2017, Ironman 70.3 Ohio in July 2017, Ironman 70.3 Steelhead in August 2017, and his most recent, Ironman 70.3 Florida in April 2018.

Ironman 70.3 Florida is his best finish to date, coming in at 4 hours and 30 minutes, which ultimately qualified him for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in South Africa. Mooney said, “This has been a goal of mine since I started triathlon, so it was a pretty special trip.”

“The World Championship race in South Africa will be my biggest race to date, so I will be ramping up training from what I normally do leading up to a race,” Mooney said. He will be spending time between graduation and September in Colorado training and working. Mooney said, “In terms of goals, I’m still not quite to sure what to expect at a World Championship race, so I’m really just looking to go and have the best race I can. It should be a tremendous opportunity and I will just try to make the most of it.”

Good luck, Bryan!
