Division 3 Hockey at Indiana University Collaborates with Zeta Tau Alpha's BMOC for 3rd Annual P
On Thursday, September 29th, the D3 Hockey Team at Indiana University will host their third annual Pink the Rink game. This year, the team is partnering with Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, which supports breast cancer education and awareness through their Think Pink program. Each year leading up to and during this game, the team tries to raise as much money as possible to donate to breast cancer research—specifically, IU Health’s Olcott Center. The Hoosiers will be donating to the Olcott Center again this year, as well as Zeta Tau Alpha’s philanthropy.
The Olcott Center provides education, support, counseling, and more for those fighting cancer, as well as their family members. The center offers a variety of different services at no cost, thanks to donations, grants, and fundraisers. Last year, the team raised $2,000 for the Olcott Center at the second annual Pink the Rink game, while beating Robert Morris 9-1.
This is the first year that Division 3 Hockey at Indiana University and Zeta Tau Alpha are partnering together. Tori Cartwright, Zeta Tau Alpha’s Philanthropy Chairman, stated that partnering with IU Hockey will help her sorority reach a larger demographic for BMOC—Big Man on Campus. BMOC has raised over $798,000 in the past four years, which makes Zeta’s foundation the largest Greek-led philanthropy in the nation.
"BMOC is an all-male talent show. There is usually a representative act from each fraternity house. Each BMOC boy is responsible for selling as many tickets and t-shirts to their house as possible. They each have their own fundraising page and will ask for donations. The night of the event, October 21, 2016, we will announce the highest fundraiser and then the best act will win the title of ‘Big Man On Campus.’"
When asked why her and Molly Cowen, co-philanthropy chairman, thought it was a good idea to partner with D3 Hockey at Indiana University, Cartwright explained, “Some of the girls in the house are friends with guys on the D3 Hockey Team at Indiana University. Being a senior (Tori) and junior (Molly) we have heard of multiple Pink the Rink games, as well as, gone through multiple BMOC events. We needed to bring something new to the table, something that has not been done in the 17 years that Zeta has hosted BMOC.”
Both Zeta Tau Alpha and the Division 3 Hockey Team at Indiana University see this as a partnership continuing in years to come. Cartwight claimed, “I’m not sure why it hasn’t been done in years past. Even talking with Nick [Mpistolarides] and Ben [Seinfeld], we were bouncing ideas off of each other and I really think that Zeta can help promote this game and raise a lot of money for such a great cause!”
In addition to Zeta Tau Alpha being one of our Pink the Rink partner’s, D3 Hockey at Indiana University is a sponsor for BMOC and will have a strong presence prior and during the event.
