Rich Holdeman

ACHA Hall of Fame Class of 2013

 

 

Rich Holdeman was inducted into the ACHA Hall of Fame in Naples, FL on May 4th, 2013. He became just the sixth non-player inductee to the Hall of Fame, as well as just the 11th member overall. Holdeman also became the first inductee from a Division II program. 

 

Holdeman served as the Head Coach of the Division 3 Hockey at Indiana University hockey program for 13 seasons (1992-2003 and 2004-2006), and had a career coaching record of 251-116-19. In his 13 seasons as head coach, the Hoosiers never had a losing record. During Holdeman's tenure, he made it to the national tournament ten consecutive times, as well as the national championship game three times (1995, 1998, 2000). Holdeman was also recgonized as the Southeast Region Caoch of the Year in 2005, as well as the National Coach of the Year in 2002, the first year the award was given at the Division II level. 

 

Rich Holdeman is a native of Columbus, Indiana where he started his playing career as an all-state athlete in both ice hockey and soccer. Holdeman left Columbus to attend Culver Military Academy in 1985 before moving on to Yale University where he would recieve a B.A. in biological psychology. After graduating, Holdeman returned to Culver where he spent three seasons as an assistant under Al Clark. After three seasons at Culver, Holdeman moved to Bloomington to earn his Ph.D in molecular and cellular biology from Indiana University in 1997, while coaching the team. Holdeman stayed at IU after earning his Ph.D as a lecturer in the Department of Biology. Today, Rich still resides in Bloomington with his wife Amy and their four daughters.

 

On Friday January 31st before their Senior Night matchup vs Michigan, the team honored coach Holdeman by presenting him with a banner that will hang from the rafters of Frank Southern Ice Arena for years to come. The Indiana University hockey program is honored to be one of just nine schools nationwide who can boast that they hold a member in the ACHA Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Rich Holdeman on all his amazing accomplishments in his 13 season tenure with the program.
